Has Anyone Really Understood Jesus?

Picture a green garden at night, moonlight shining blue on the leaves. All is quiet but for the calls of distant birds. Mediterranean winds blow in from the sea. A lone man kneels upon the ground as shadows shift over him. As he prostrates himself, he cries out to God, pleading that there must be some other way to accomplish his mission.

When he gets up and turns to his companions, the ones he asked to stay awake and keep watch, he sees that they have fallen fast asleep. Although they followed their master through the three years of his public ministry, in the last remaining hours before his death they are unable to support him by staying awake. Why is this? Do they not care about their beloved rabbi? Or did they just not believe him when he told them he would go to the cross, no matter what they did?

Join us in considering these and other questions about the inner world and outer experiences of Jesus in this series.
