1, 2, 3... 4 Creative Ways To Live To The Beat Of The Universe

The universe is made up of patterns, from the large scale down to the little details. Have you ever noticed, as Reverend Sun Myung Moon describes, “This created world is round everywhere: the sun, the earth and the stars; everything is created round”? Father Moon goes on to say, “Even our mouth, if we analyze it, is round. No matter what, everything is created that way.”

When studying design basics, artists learn that round objects convey comfort and completeness. How does this relate to us? Father Moon explains: “The universe makes relationships by going around and around, making circular, cyclical movements. … One individual thing does not exist by itself individually but makes a relational connection with the whole. … We are born to beat in rhythm with this vast universe. Ocean waves lapping against the shore lap against our hearts as well. Gentle breezes sighing serenely lull our hearts into serenity. Flowers in bloom release rich fragrances and stir the fragrances in our hearts.” (Cheong Seong Gyeong, Book 5, Section 1.3)

The harmonious, cyclical nature of the universe prompts us to see how we are one with the universe through stable give-and-receive relationships with nature and with people. It can be difficult to reconcile these beautiful, ideal words of love and harmony with the conflict taking place in our backyard and in our heart. The violence we see in the news stems from humankind’s inability to relate to others in the harmonious way that Father Moon prescribes, which leads to misunderstandings, fear and hate. As we go about our day-to-day lives, let’s remember that change in the world begins with us, when we’re able to find peace in our own hearts as they beat with the universe.

Here are a few patterns you can practice in your life that will get your heart beating to the rhythm of the universe:

Perpetuating Goodness

Remember that you are affected by the things you surround yourself with. This doesn’t include only relationships: What kind of negativity are you perpetuating by posting this Facebook comment, or sharing that link? Awareness and change are important, but examine your purpose and attitude before you speak and act. Whenever you think of it, make a positive statement or take a positive action.

Rethinking Relationships

The quality of our relationships depends on what we invest. We all want our relationships to be happy and smooth—not jagged and difficult. Are you actively showing your loved ones that you love and respect them? How? Be mindful of the energy you are putting into your relationships; express love, sincerity.

Taking Comfort from Nature

Father Moon talks about how God’s love and care are active in nature. The push and pull of the universe, the rise and fall of the tide, are examples of how nature teaches us how to relate to one another. We can strive to find peace in the whisper of the wind, and when we feel discontent, surround ourselves with nature and recharge by soaking up the love.

Living in Harmony with Nature

To maintain the cyclical nature of the universe that Father Moon describes, we need give and take. If you find solace in nature and gain energy from this world, remember that you have the responsibility to care for it, too. This Earth, as vast as it is, is a delicate thing. Think of all the love you get, and give back, so that future generations can continue to live to the beat of the universe.
