How To Make Yourself Useful On Columbus Day

Many Americans are celebrating the long weekend, thanks to a national holiday in honor of Christopher Columbus, whose expeditions were a catalyst that began European settlement in the Americas. It has recently come into question whether or not he deserves to have his own holiday, and this year, Seattle and Minneapolis are celebrating the first annual Indigenous Peoples Day instead. For a lot of us, a change in name does not seem like a big deal—we’re just happy to have an extra day away from work and school. But let’s take a moment to consider what this day, and its name-change, represent.

No matter what we choose to call it, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to celebrate the roots of the United States of America. Many bricks were laid in the foundations of this new country, and not all of them were good. Nevertheless, America was established by God-loving people with the motto “In God We Trust.”

The world is getting better, according to Bill Gates. Father Moon, founder of the Unification faith, tells us that America has a wonderful tradition, but is in great need of a revival. So, in celebration of the discovery of the New World, let’s make an effort to continue building this world based on True Parents’ vision for America!

Things to do today, and every day, instead of sleeping in and spending the day on the couch:

Decide What God’s Vision Means for You

Like our personal relationship with God, we all have our own passions and talents. The way in which we can impact the world is uniquely our own. For instance, Alan Becker has used his talent in animating to touch the hearts of many Internet fans, teaching us about the power of teamwork and cooperation in his latest video, Animator vs. Animation IV. How do you think God wants you to use your gifts, for the sake of the world? Think big, and write down your thoughts. Think about steps to take towards your goal, and write that down too.

Change the World, Starting With the Family

Clearly this can’t be done in a day, but one or two steps might be taken in that direction. True Father calls the peaceful family the “building block of Heaven,” and tells us that when there is peace in the family, everything goes well. So, in honor of God’s vision, why not plan a family outing? Or a coffee-date with a family member that you don’t talk to so often?

Do Some Volunteering (for World Peace and Unification)

See if there are any local community service centers that need volunteers—or, if you can’t find one, organize a beach or trail clean-up on your own.

Host a Barbeque

Invite friends, neighbors and family, and maybe even a few strangers! Talk about what you think God’s vision is for this world, and how you can make steps towards it together. Also, eat good food and enjoy the fall weather.

Take a Moment

Invite God into your life today, and let Him be a part of your actions and decisions. If you’re planning to have a day of fun, ask him to enjoy it with you. If you are one of the unlucky ones who still has to go to class, let Him commiserate with you. Ask Him to be a part of your efforts to strengthen family relationships, and also to taste the yummy barbecue food with you.
