How To Create A Sacred Space (Anywhere You Go)

We all know that we need to take the time to rest and recharge, but it’s not always easy to tear ourselves away from a busy or worried mindset. Having a physical space to retreat to can help us snap into a new state of mind. Father Moon, founder of the Unification faith, understood the importance of having sacred spaces when he created holy grounds throughout the world including all 48 states in the continental US. Each holy ground, usually located in a public park, is meant to be a symbolic blessing for the entire country, and a place for anyone to come to pray, meditate and connect with God. Here are some ways to create your own sacred space a little closer to home:

Nature

Whether it’s laying on the beach, a hike on the mountain, or sitting under a tree in your own backyard, getting outdoors has an almost magical way of calming our minds and bodies and helping us to get into a more peaceful state. Spend some time outside exploring nearby places, take a walk, or designate a spot in your backyard: a small garden, a nice lawn chair, a strand of lights on the deck, whatever makes you feel serene and refreshed.

Cozy Corner

With a little thought and attention to detail, inside spaces can make a great retreat. Use neutral or soothing colors like blue or green, and fill up the space with beautiful objects that evoke serenity or that have a special meaning. Avoid electronics (except for maybe something to play music), as these can be overstimulating, and instead opt for books, paintings, photographs, and potted plants. Short on space? Even a small corner can be transformed with some throw pillows and a little creativity.

Sights, Sounds, and Smells

Whether inside or out, consider the sounds, smells and sights that surround you. Our physical senses have a way of triggering certain emotions and memories. Be intentional when finding or incorporating these things in your space. What smells are comforting? Plant some lilac bushes or burn a scented candle. What sounds are the most relaxing? You can block out stressful sounds like traffic or television with a noise machine, music, or even a small fountain. What colors are pleasing or make you feel calm? Consider these for wall colors or any objects you bring in, such as artwork or pillows.

On the Go

We don’t always have the luxury of being able to retreat to our special place. Whether we’re traveling or in the midst of a busy day, there are still things we can do to help us take a beat and gain some much-needed mental space. Use a journal to write down inspirations, sort your thoughts or to clear out worries from your mind. Try carrying around a totem—an object that holds some symbolic meaning. It could be a religious symbol, an animal, or a photograph—something that just by looking at or touching, you can connect to that meaning and feel a sense of peace and calm, or even courage and strength.

If we are all meant to be “Temples of God”, then we should be able to find that sacred space within ourselves wherever we go! These physical spaces are just a way to help trigger our minds to focus inward to the real sacred space within each one of us.
