What Makes Us Unstoppable
We all want to live powerful lives full of meaning and action, like those characters we see in movies: the busy bees who have whirlwind social lives, enviable careers, big projects and travels, not to mention families. Those depictions may not be entirely realistic, but we do have the ability to do much more than we settle for. What makes up the kind of willpower we all seek?
How do I get my butt off the couch?
It starts with having a clear direction; however, something that plagues us all is lethargy and laziness, overcoming our bodies’ resistance to what in our minds we know to be right. Even the simple act of waking up early in the morning is seldom easy for any of us. We want to be a world of doers, but how do we get up on our feet, and do things that can affect change?
In the Divine Principle, the resolution to this conflict is called mind and body unity. It is the total harmony between our thoughts and our actions, and takes a lot of discipline and training to achieve. Imagine: What would my life be like if I actually did all the things I dreamed of? What would the world be like if we all acted upon what we know to be right?
If we all work to become doers, maybe, person by person, this world can wake up and be inspired to make epic changes toward creating global harmony, innovating the fields of science and health, fostering strong families, and so on.
Here’s your first opportunity to be a doer this summer and literally get up off the couch and out into action! We have a special trip on our calendar called the God’s Hope for America road trip, a journey across the nation to remember, revive and reimagine a world where God’s principles are in place, and we are all living for the greater good. See how you can get involved; you won’t regret the inspiration and adventure.
Know what you stand for.
They say life’s too short to be anyone but ourselves. Knowing our values and living them confidently makes our every act united with what we know to be good and true, but it can be difficult to live values that are not widely supported in this broken world.
Think about what you value. Make a list. What aspects of your life support these values? What aspects seem to contradict them? And where do these contradictions come from? It is incredible what we can accomplish when we have a higher purpose that we can attend to with full confidence and conviction.
Make goals.
It’s great to know our values, and even to live them out loud, but how can we use them to fuel our lives? Are good intentions enough? Sometimes we need a little more to lead an unstoppable life of influence. We need direction.
What makes goals so powerful is that they are conscious and intentional. When we plant a seed in our minds, we don’t need a clear plan of action (though that is incredibly helpful, too); we simply need to know what we want and where we’re headed. The “how” will take care of itself and unfold over time.
See for yourself! Make 3 goals, right now: one to accomplish by the end of today, one for the week, and another for this month. They can be anything. It may help to write them down, whether on your hand, on your smartphone, or by making a vision board to hang on your wall.
Take responsibility.
A part of realizing all that we can do is realizing what is most difficult, but necessary, to do. Some of life’s great feats arose from people stepping outside of their comfort zones and taking control when they saw they could make a difference.
Practice this step by step, from picking up trash you see on the sidewalk to adopting similar habits in a higher influence setting, like your work environment. At work this week, take notice of areas that need improvement, and take that into your own hands. Keep this in mind each day, and make steps toward eventually taking responsibility for a better world, in whatever ways you can contribute.
We don’t have to be alone. Sharing our values and goals with others can help to hold each other accountable and seek help where we need it. Care to share your list of values and goals with DP Life? Enter them in the comments below!
