It Takes a Village to Create a Culture

culture (n): the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group

Have you ever thought about culture not just as something that’s been passed to you for generations, but as something you can build? What might the benefit be of taking your culture into your own hands, and molding it into what you want it to be? And furthermore, is it possible to build a world culture? What kind of culture would you wish to someday see practiced around the world?

According to Father and Mother Moon, creating a new culture of heart is essential if we’re ever to concretely attain world peace. When it comes to changing the world for the better, they say start with the culture. It’s like what life coaches might tell you when aiming for your goals: start with the habits, the lifestyle you live each day.

As Mother Moon said on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of her and Father Moon’s ministry, building a culture takes work. You can’t just dream it; you need to go out there and exemplify it to make it a reality.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.”

Mahatma Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

It might seem lonely to go against the grain, to practice a culture that doesn’t yet have much ground among the majority. But, it turns out, there’s already an entire community around the world who is committed to building this culture!

In pursuit of the foundation of a heavenly culture, Father and Mother Moon set out on an intentional course toward building a global culture where we not only respect each other but love each other as one family. Of course they’ve opened this mission to all people on earth, and those who answer that call call themselves Unificationists.

As nations celebrate their independence day or founder’s day, Unificationists celebrate Foundation Day each year to celebrate this culture in the making, and as a way to constantly redetermine ourselves to doing this work, together.
