Three Tips To Simplify Your Career Choice

We often ask ourselves what we want to do with our lives, but it’s a simple question that never has a simple answer. The answer can evolve over time; it might become more or less specific or might even make a complete U-turn. We can even collapse under the weight of too many choices and feel there is no clear path to follow.

There are times when questions can be the answers we need. Questions allow us to hone in on the specifics of what we hope to contribute through our life. Why not take a minute to ask yourself the questions: What do I care about? What am I good at? And what does the world need? While you’re at it, here are some pointers to help you on your journey of success and self-discovery.

Life Isn’t About Your Salary

It’s easy to feel that our life is measured by how much money we make. Our logic can be that more money equals a better job. Yet how incalculable is the value of a life-saving firefighter or doctor? Or the teacher that imparts knowledge on countless children? These are career paths that allow us to live purpose-driven lives and reward ourselves with something more than a paycheck.

What gives these positions value is the difference they make in the lives of others. In fact, through any position we can leave a positive impact when we make it our focus. Living for others enriches our lives through enriching the lives of those around us. Through supporting, encouraging and empowering others we leave a lasting impact that cannot be measured by money.

Self-Development Means Learning to Help Others

The world can often seem individualistic. We develop our skillsets for pay raises, promotions and to help further our career. While this is not inherently bad it can often detract the focus from using our talents to give something back to the world. This is why Father Moon said that “Educators should not teach how live selfishly but instead impart the wisdom needed to resolve the myriad social problems we face today. Instead, they need to give their students the wisdom to love humanity and build a world of peace.”

When we take time to reflect we can ask ourselves where our priorities lie in the things we do. Remember that self-improvement is important because it increases our capacity to help others. If what we’re doing doesn’t contribute to something beyond ourselves then maybe it’s time to re-think how it can.

Bring Passion into Everything You Do

To say life is unpredictable would be an understatement. However our free will is always something we can use and we are free to find passion in everything that we pursue. Ultimately, passion doesn’t need to be limited to a single dream. Why not make passion a lifestyle choice? Whether you’re doing your job, chasing your dreams or getting the kids ready for school, there is always an opportunity to give something extra.

Be sure to always challenge yourself and your situations. Clarity comes through engagement. Why not try something that takes you out of your comfort zone, and use challenge to discover your hidden strengths? We sometimes know what we need to do but fear taking action. We often find our inner potential by living life head-on and not sitting on the side-lines.

Our legacy is not just what we leave behind but also the inspirational journey behind our impact. It is the sum of all our actions, not just our results.

So, what gets you up in the morning? What motivates you, and why do you do what you do every day? Who or what gives you a sense of purpose and why? These questions may lead us to more questions, but isn’t that the beauty of the journey?
